Darkmoor

Is there any particular lore reason why Darkmoor has to be in the ancient city? Compared to Xymoria, it is an Epic Quest to get to Darkmoor. You have to go through 5 or 6 area transitions, have the old rope (which I sold long ago) and a key to the gate (can't remember if you need the key or it has to be picked?)

Not as such no.
Darkmoor was placed there as a hidden surprice but one could opt for other versions such as fx a hidden path east of Balderlings Homestead or west of Northern Hillshire or what not...

*UPDATE*
It should be noted that Darkmoor is indeed no longer placed in the ancient City and that any level evil character can find its location in safety and once known evil and neutral characters can make their home there…
